Perfect Powder Rooms

A powder room allows design flair and functionality to coexist in harmony. Space dependant, a powder room can not only house a toilet and basin but also storage in the form of mirrored cabinets or a more spacious vanity unit, as well as a shower to double as a guest ensuite if required.

In many two-storey family homes you may find bedrooms and bathrooms all upstairs with kitchen, living and dining spaces located on the ground floor. A well-positioned and cleverly designed powder room will service family and guests conveniently on the ground floor. Typically, it will be located close to the main entertaining spaces of the home, such as the kitchen and living for easy access for guests. In our climate we like to do a lot of living and entertaining outdoors therefore it would be practical to position the powder room in close proximity and with easy access to the outdoor space.

A powder room is an opportunity to be brave and dramatic with material selections and styling. It is a space which will have high traffic of homeowners and their guests. Typically, we would encourage the material palette to be an extension of the rest of the house so that the space continues the same ‘story’ as the home.

Drama and opulence can be created in volume, with high ceilings, interesting architectural shapes and forms, and being bold with colour and texture. This can be brought to life with unique tile choices, quirky mirrors, feature paint and even through the use of wallpaper. You don’t necessarily have to use tile on the floor so you could extend the main house flooring into the powder space such as timber or concrete to create a cohesive flow between spaces. Lighting is also important to consider when designing your powder room, feature pendants or wall lights that are dimmable can enhance the mood and feel of the space.

The perfect powder room enhances the overall liveability, which will increase the value of your home. They allow for more flexibility, especially within a family home. They also add convenience and privacy for the home owner when entertaining.

When designing a powder room have fun with it! You want to create a space that is an extension of the rest of your home, yet ensure it is memorable for all users.
